NORTH KENT TRIALS COMBINE MEETING HELD 12th January 2006.
Apologies for absence: None received.
Present: Sidcup, Bexleyheath, Kent & Sussex, Gravesend, Erith, Double Five. (6 clubs with 11 members present)
Chair: Colin Mote
Minutes of Last Meeting: An apology as the next meeting date was wrong.
Matters Arising: None
January 8th Trial: NKTC Fun Team Trial at Horsmonden. There were 19 entries on the day and 34 in the programme a total of 53 competitors, 4 laps of 10 sections. Struggled to get all the observers for the start but all sections were covered for the trial. Feed back from riders was that it was a slippery trial. There was a major problem getting vehicles out of the field due to the rain and probably not a good idea to use this ground in winter. All present worked together to ensure every one got out. See AOB.
Comment from those present; Thanks to Bexleyheath members for clearing back the scrub at the entrance; Good trial enjoyed by all those talked to; Next time we should have access to a tractor to tow out. Scores not to the combine guidelines but this was a fun trial and it was slippery with the rain, no problem.
February 12th Trial round 1: Gravesend at Yetnor Farm. All ok. Sidcup to provide the Steward.
March 12th Trial Wickham round 2: No-one present at the meeting from the club so we assume all is ok. Gravesend to provide the Steward.
Meetings coming up:SE Centre AGM on 18th Jan 2006 at Blindley Heath with a 7.30pm start.
Any Other Business: The CSMA Red Tape trial for the 5th Feb has been cancelled as confirmed with the organisers.
The invoice for our latest Team Trial has come in with a note that if it is paid late we will incur a surcharge of £10 a day. Q. How was this decided? Could this be something to bring up at the SEC AGM on the 18th Jan.
Proposed NKTC Inter Club Competition scores have been produced using 2005 trials results to see if it could work. Results passed round and it would appear that the larger clubs had a better chance of winning, although this is not a guarantee as, 3 good riders from a small club in 3 different classes could yield a surprise result.
Decision made to run it with the following format: Each of the 10 combine trials would be run and produce results in the normal way. The top 3 riders from each club would score their class points and these would be aggregated as their clubs result. Clubs do not nominate their 3 riders as points come from the results. Points are only gained if the class has a minimum of 3 riders in the programme that are starters on the day. Entries on the day as usual do not qualify for points. SW will provide aggregate scores to our monthly meetings.
Query on final result of 2005 aggregate for Pre67B & Twinshock Red class as published in TSM, SW to liaise with RA. Several of the 2005 provisional results needed sorting to gain the correct points allocation.
Roger Abbott has now passed the task of recorder over to Steve Westley with effect from the 1st Jan 2006 and the Combine would like to thank him for his work since he took it on. He will of course continue his sterling work sorting the annual trophies for us.
Discussion led by the Gravesend members who have a sizable number of Pre67 riders who now do not have their own class in NKTC events (all Pre67’s still ride on the red route but due to minimal entries in 2005 have been incorporated into the Twinshock Red class). This rule change at the 2005 AGM could cause the club hardship as they may lose these members. Background to the changes talked about and although there is no guarantee of a pre67 class being full in 2006, in view of the problem that one of our clubs may have, an EGM has been called for the 16th February 2006 which will take place immediately before the normal meeting. Rather than have all Pre67 bikes in the Twinshock Red class and no Pre67A or Pre67B classes the proposal is ‘To introduce a single Pre67 class along with the Twinshock Red class for points and awards’. If passed at the EGM this would introduce the Pre 67 class in time for the Wickham trial in March 2006. Each club should have a member present to cast their clubs vote.
Although the use of www.trialsinfo.com was declined last year some interest had been shown for the NKTC to have its own website to promote the interests of the combine and its constituent clubs. SW confirmed this could be done for approx £20 and renewals for £10 annually. Agreed for SW to set it up and claim cost on expenses.
CM asked to leave room and we discussed the towing out of the many stranded vehicles after our Team Trial on 8.1.06 by CM & RS using their 4x4’s. For the wear and tear sustained to their vehicles the sum of £100 each would be awarded to them from combine funds; passed unanimously. CM returned and advised.
ICTT update, a break even budget had been presented to management and agreed in principle. Clubs will be written to requesting certain funding.
No further business, the meeting closed 22.15pm
Date of the EGM is the 16th February 2006 8.30pm start; this will be followed by the normal meeting.

Proposal: ‘To introduce a single Pre67 class along with the Twinshock Red class for points and awards’
Sidcup, Bexleyheath, Kent & Sussex, Owls, Gravesend, Erith,
Double Five. (7 clubs with 13 members present)
The proposer outlined the clubs reasons for this proposal and discussion took place between the members present. One club not present had outlined their view by email which was read out.
To reach a compromise an amendment to the proposal was agreed and this was voted in, in place of the original proposal.
To replace the Twinshock Red class the following wording was voted for; ‘To introduce a single Pre67/Twinshock Red class for points and awards’.
This was accepted by a majority and will be effective immediately.
The original proposal failed.

NORTH KENT TRIALS COMBINE MEETING HELD 16th February 2006.
Apologies for absence: Andy Hogg.
Present: Sidcup, Bexleyheath, Kent & Sussex, Owls, Gravesend, Erith,
Double Five. (7 clubs with 13 members present)
Chair: Colin Mote
Minutes of Last Meeting: Ok
Matters Arising: None
February 12th Trial round 1: Gravesend at Yetnor Farm. Stewards report read out; 3 laps of 13 sections all manned by the start. 59 entries with 7 on the day and 5 non-starters, 1 entry withdrawn. The Club did their best in the rainy conditions which had not been forecast, rain can bring out the best in some riders and the clerk did some alterations after the first lap. The muddy conditions do not suit all riders but overall it was a good trial. The owner was pleased to see that our riders followed his request to kill the engines in the yard and push, due to a very sick animal nearby.
Comment from those present; good trial well set out, some riders had gone early because of the conditions.
March 12th Trial Wickham round 2: No-one present at the meeting from the club but as regs in TSM we assume all is ok, however not all classes have appeared correctly and the following are the correct NKTC classes; Expert, Expert B, Intermediate, Novice, Twinshock Blue, Pre67/Twinshock Red (as per EGM just held), Youth Expert, Youth Intermediate, Youth Novice. Each class is for points and awards as per NKTC rules. Note; late entries will not count for points and awards despite printing problem. Gravesend to provide the Steward.
April 9th Trial, Kent Youth round 3: email note to say ok. Wickham to provide the Steward.
Info from recent meetings: At SE AGM it was confirmed that all event forms must be sent in immediately after the trial and late payment charges of £10 per day will be levied if the resulting invoice is not paid within 7 days. If there is a problem with this Ken Piles must be informed straight away.
Copies of the précis of ACU Board of Directors meeting 26th Jan 06 handed out for the benefit of those who are not on email. Points arising can be dealt with next meeting.
Any Other Business: The NKTC website is up and running www.nktc.org.uk and clubs are welcome to send in items for their clubs page.
Roger Abbott is handing back the job of sorting the trophies for the combine awards. Some riders are just not handing back the annual trophies promptly. As no-one present wished to take on this task Colin Mote volunteered to. Winners schedule for 2004 handed over + 2005 list. The TSM have again printed the wrong final aggregates for 2005 somehow they used the 2004 results. NKTC website has final aggregates on it.
Colin Mote confirmed that all our wobbler trials have checks on the bikes as per ACU and other members present said they did do this.
A separate matter was discussed to obtain opinion which was not combine related; in Centre events a major problem appears to be arising with some Expert riders seemingly riding all together at the back of the trial whatever their start number. Discussion took place. Observers need to allow them a reasonable time to view the section then call the lowest number to start or have a 10 penalty, then the next lowest etc. The trial needs to have a closing time with a sweeper taking the cards down. Each rider needs to be given a specific time relative to their starting time in the programme in which they must complete the trial or face time penalties. The 3 trials so far this year seems to have brought it to a head and if they got on with it and rode the sections without unnecessary delay it would not cause the late running of a trial. Note; Are there any Experts who would care to put their point of view forward as to why this seems to have come up as a problem this year or is it indeed a problem from your standpoint? Let me know ASAP.
No further business, the meeting closed 21.51pm
Next meeting is on the 16th March 2006.

2. Minutes of Last Meeting
3. Matters Arising

NORTH KENT TRIALS COMBINE MEETING HELD 16th March 2006.
Present: Sidcup, Bexleyheath, Kent & Sussex, Owls, Wickham, Kent Youth, Gravesend, Erith,
Double Five. (9 clubs with 11 members present)
Chair: Colin Mote
Apologies for absence: Peter Burton, Les Matton.
Minutes of Last Meeting: Ok
Matters Arising: Under AOB a couple of Expert riders had indicated that the course was set out to take marks from the better riders who had entered, rather than set the course for the majority at Centre level. They naturally want to see how these riders tackle the sections and follow their lead. Bunching happens as this takes place and it is not a problem for the riders trying to keep their scores to a minimum.
Comment that the Eastern Centre has sorted this problem by running their trials over 4 laps with the first lap scores not counted. Allows Experts to try it out on the 1st lap.
March 12th Trial Wickham round 2: Run at Sandfields Farm, Cowden; Stewards report read out, 3 laps of 13 sections with 74 competitors starting; 5 mins late starting due to lack of observers but all 12 sections were manned; 6 riders in programme were Wickham members?; sections were well marked but were too severe on all routes for combine; couple of ‘hairy’ drops & climbs; section 2 on red route had some riders refusing to ride the last drop between trees; 2 riders retired injured one to hospital; it was an enjoyable trial though.
Discussion; although published results were not yet available the winners scores were known Ex 27, ExB 24, Int 40, Nov 29 and in view of conditions deemed acceptable; all riders must wear a crash helmet whilst riding including officials; good trial but hard for the novices; this piece of land produces a hard trial and we need the mix through the year, the 6 Wickham riders will not score points-4 were out of centre joining just to ride-1 was in fact a KYTC member and the 6th should not have been riding as a long standing rule prohibits riders entering their home clubs combine trial; the NKTC will always provide help to any club that struggles with the administrative side; the Wickham member agreed with all the constructive discussion. Review results at next meeting.
April 9th Trial, Kent Youth round 3: Andy Hogg running it but is likely to need help with observing and outlined the reasons. Wickham to provide the Steward.
May 14th Trial, Owls round 4: all ok and Kent Youth to provide the Steward.
Info from recent meetings: The Ridgeway Cup run in October by the Erith club is to replace the cancelled CSMA round as a championship round
Any Other Business: Congratulations to double five for the standard of their recent wobbler trial, good routes for all participants.
The changes to the ACU Handbook for 2006 have not been noted by the usual vertical line although they will be next year, a meeting takes place 18.3.06 which might get details, if not we will need to do it ourselves. It should be out on disc soon.
Discussion on state of our trophies and a budget for awards, nothing resolved.

NORTH KENT TRIALS COMBINE MEETING HELD 13th April 2006.
Present: Sidcup, Bexleyheath, Kent & Sussex, Kent Youth, Gravesend, Erith, Double Five. (7 clubs with 10 members present)
Chair: Colin Mote
Apologies for absence: Ray Denyer & Barry Wilmot.
Minutes of Last Meeting: Ok
March 12th Trial Wickham round 2 results: Results ok.
April 9th Trial, Kent Youth round 3: Run at Whitepost farm, Cowden; Stewards report read out, 4 laps of 10 sections with 53 in programme, 4 non starters and 4 entries on the day. Trial started on time, good route marking and all sections manned, riders spoken to were enjoying themselves and there was a good variety of sections. An excellent trial. Comments from those present; good to see the youths observing and a good trial; impressed by the organisation and help provided by the club.
May 14th Trial, Owls round 4: all ok and Kent Youth to provide the Steward.
June 11th Trial, Erith round 5: all ok and Owls to provide the Steward but will need help with the observing.
Info from recent meetings: forthcoming meetings; Centre Board mtg 10th May & SE Centre Trials Combine mtg 25th May at Blindley Heath.
Trophies: All trophies appear to be back and the presentation will take place at the Owls trial on 14th May. Most improved rider award 2005 decided. The committee also agreed that there needs to be certain criteria for annual awards to be won and decided unanimously that for the 2006 season onwards that there must be at least 5 riders with points in the class and that at least one of them must have gained points in 5 trials. If this criteria is not met the annual trophy will not be awarded although there will still be a class winner. As the youth classes are subject to age stipulations the criteria may not apply and will be reviewed at the end of each season.
Any Other Business: Farmers have been advised by an article in their weekly publication that they are able to add to their income by allowing trials to take place on their land for a fee. This may increase the amount of land that is available to us. The ACU direct any enquiries by farmers to their local centre.
Letter received from the SE Centre Trials Combine concerning the Inter Centre Team Trial on 2nd & 3rd September at Hook Woods, discussed and agreed to forward Cheque for £100 with any help to come from individual clubs who will also have had this letter.
The Stewards report form was missing from the Kent Youth trial pack but confirmed it is included with the Owls one.

Minutes of Last Meeting: Ok
Matters Arising:None
May 14th Trial, Owls round 4: Stewards report read out; 49 entries in programme, 9non-starters and 10 entries on the day. All riders spoken to had positive comments to make and the clerk whilst keeping us out of the serious mud laid on 14 sections with a good variety. A good trial. Comments from those present agreed and the results were good.
June 11th Trial, Erith round 5: all ok and Owls to provide the Steward but will need help with the observing.
July 9th Trial, Double Five round 6: all ok with Erith to provide the Steward.
Info from recent meetings: SE Centre Board mtg held on 10th May info;
Permit Secretary advised that if an Adult Permit is obtained, Youths are uninsured if they ride under it, clubs must obtain a joint Adult & Youth Permit to allow for this;
Club members are welcome to come to the Centre Management Committees but contact Alan Clarke first so he is aware of numbers;
Holes punched in ACU cards are for the Officials Lanyards which Officials should have received (some officials present had not had them);
The ACU have formed ACU Events Ltd to oversee the organisation of National Events so that all suppliers of goods and services will get paid properly and only then will the Promoter receive the balance of funds;
Some of the changes to the NSC in the 2004 handbook were missed out in the 2005 publication and all officials were apparently to have been sent the missing info in what is known as the ‘Blue Book’ (some officials present had not had this or even heard of it), they are now in the 2006 handbook but at a National level there is a disproportionate timescale and cost for officials compared to competitors. A satisfactory outcome is still being pursued;
There is a SE Centre Trials Combine mtg on the 25th May at Blindley Heath 7.45pm start.
Trophies: The presentation took place at the Owls trial on 14th May for the riders. The refurbished Observer Trophy was presented to Dick Dickenson and its background from the 2nd World War was outlined by Gordon Davis.
Any Other Business: Peter Burton thanked the combine for its donation to the ICTT and outlined the reasons for the cancellation of the Sidcup 30. Michael Nutbrown is the new Sidcup Trials Secretary and should be attending our meetings in future.
Discussion on how we should be introducing new riders into our Wobbler series and how they need to be given outline rules on etiquette at trials. Each club has its own way of induction so maybe we need to ensure that each rider reads the same set of basic do’s & don’ts at each wobbler trial, or we hold a massed briefing before each event. On the agenda for discussion at next meeting for each club delegate to bring with them what they consider to be minimum requirements for riders at Wobblers.
Discussed that not all clubs seem to be giving out awards to those winners at combine trials, review rules to see what should be done.

July 9th Trial, Double Five round 6: Stewards report read out; a very well organised
event, route marking a bit thin, all observers had TSR22A marking sheet but on one
section riders were not being given a five for going backwards. SW for the club said that
the sections had been set out for a dry trial and a specific gate on the section
concerned, due to the lingering showers, would have given the majority of two classes a
five if a strict interpretation of the rules were applied. The observer told every rider on
that route that at that gate a backward slip would not incur a five, unless the bike was
dragged back to get a better line. After the second lap it had dried and was marked
according to the rules. This was accepted. Agreed that the route marking from section 9
to 10 was minimal. Comment from those present was that it was a good trial and that
the results showed it to be spot on.
August 13th Trial, No Event planned:
September 10th Trial, Bexleyheath round 7: all ok at Burwash with Double Five to provide the Steward.
October 8th Trial, Kent & Sussex round 8: in hand meeting next Friday, with Bexleyheath to provide the Steward.
Info from recent meetings: None.
Wobbler Events minimum standards: www.doublefive.co.uk has a section on ‘Starting out in Trials’ which gives a good explanation to the new rider. A copy of part of it ‘Machine Examination – Trials’ was handed out that comprised of excerpts from the 2006 handbook, plus an interpretation on chain guards for youth riders. With an addition to include youth clothing requirements, it makes a good check list to follow. It is this type of trial that can bring in the new rider with a minimal understanding of what they can and can’t do and how they should behave. Discussion on minimum standards followed. Continue at next meeting

NORTH KENT TRIALS COMBINE MEETING HELD 14th September 2006.
Present: Sidcup, Bexleyheath, Kent Youth, Erith, Double Five, Kent & Sussex.

Apologies for absence: Peter Burton, Ray Denyer for Owls

September 10th Trial, Bexleyheath round 7: Stewards report read out; 44 entries in programme, 4 non starters, 3 of whom had previously advised Roger, 6 entries on the day. Rider number 3 upgraded to inter on the day for no award. Sections 1 & 2 altered after lap 1 and this was clearly noted. A well laid out trial with an interesting mix of 10 river and 3 dry sections. These provided an excellent variety of drop offs, climbs, camber and roots with a varying severity according to the class you entered. Riders to whom I spoke to said the trial was just right. Congratulations to Paul Stephen the Clerk of the Course for providing an excellent days sport. Well done Bexleyheath.
Comments from those present all agreed. We should set out trials as hard as possible. Lengthy discussion on the severity of the Intermediate route and ‘Bouncing and Hopping’ in sections (see items for AGM)
October 8th Trial, Kent & Sussex round 8: all ok, Bexleyheath to provide the Steward.
Nov 5th Trial Sidcup round 9: Permit obtained all ok, Kent & Sussex to provide the Steward.
Info from recent meetings: SE Centre Trials combine meeting poorly attended (it was the holiday season) and discussion was on forthcoming Inter Centre Team Trial (which our adult team won).
Wobbler Events minimum standards: Brief discussion on minimum standards and how we should move it on followed. It’s up to each Clerk of the Course and the club officials to advise riders if seen misbehaving. Might continue with this at next meeting.
Items for AGM in October. The following have been received and were discussed to allow club committees time to decide prior to the AGM.
From the Meeting Introduce an Intermediate B class for riders who are too good for the Novice red route but not able to do the full Intermediate blue route, for whatever reason.
Discussion, the jump from riding Red up to Blue is huge and riders are dropping out because of it, this is similar to what we have as an Expert B route, an Inter B route might not have awards which needs to be decided, no extra route required as the Inter B’s ride on the red route except where there is a notice on the start gate of a specified number of sections that the ‘Inter B’s ride Blue’.
Kent & Sussex suggested that in order to encourage more to come forward as observers we could make a contribution to their expenses. Increase entry fee slightly to cover this. Discussed; we cannot make cash payments to ‘helpers’ as this may denote them as an employee with Health & Safety implications, we must not go down this route. Clubs are perfectly able to purchase food or drink items and make them available to helpers as a token of their thanks, which some clubs do at present from time to time.
Double Five are proposing that riders in all classes in NKTC trials are allowed to hop and bounce their bikes around in sections without incurring a penalty. Background to this being that the modern trials bike is able to achieve far more, requiring sections to be ever challenging and having watched most of the adult riders hop & bounce in the recent Inter Centre Team Trial, which was billed as run under TSR22A! our riders need to learn how to do this to compete at this level. Discussed; this skill has been seen in use around the country in various level of trials and observers are generally not marking it correctly for whatever reason and the inconsistency is a problem. The NKTC can make a small start in retaining observers by making the marking easier and hopefully reverse the drop in observer numbers.
Entry Fees; it was felt that they may need to go up due to increased costs but consider the parent with children and keep the increase to adult riders.
Any Other Business: Is there anyone who would be interested in taking over the Chair from Colin; silence.
Recent postage changes mean the A4 envelope which is commonly used for ACU forms has gone up to 44p 1st & 37p 2nd class and the post office will not always deliver unless the excess is paid; currently £1 + extra stamp cost. Clubs need to remind their members when sending them to Clubs for signature.

1. Apologies for absence. Michael Nutbrown, Karen Shave
2. Minutes of last AGM 13.10.2005. Ok.
3. Matters arising. None.
4. Treasurers report. The combine ran two successful team trials to raise funds and the refurbishment and purchase of our annual trophy awards spent it. This spend on the trophies was long overdue but should not recur for quite a few years. The combine does however need to consider increasing the funds available to it. The accounts were passed and there was a vote of confidence for our Treasurer
5. Election of Officers. Discussion and, as the assembly were happy with the current make up of the officers, and as there were no offers to take on any of the positions they were all voted back in on block.
6. Air Ambulance donation. Voted again to donate £100 to the service in Jan.
7. Best sporting youth. This category is aimed at recognizing the youths who are active in our sport both in riding in trials and in helping the administration of clubs running trials. It is not simply the best rider in our combine but the best all rounder. One name put forward at the meeting, clubs will consider further names at the November meeting and make a decision.
8. 2007 levy (2006 £25). We do have sufficient funds for our ordinary activities but we should aim to build up funds for the unexpected where outgoings are high. Discussion. Unanimous vote to raise levy in 2007 to £50.
9. Review Combine entry fees (2006 £13). The recent survey of combine riders showed that the vast majority would continue in the sport even if the entry fee was raised. It was noted that in view of land costs, small clubs may find cost increases and make losses. Taking account of previous comments at meetings and other trials regs in the TSM it was voted to increase the entry fee for Adults in our combine trials to £15 with the Youth remaining at £13. Discussion on late entry/enter on the day fees. The Clerk of the Course sets out the trial on the skill level of those riders who pre enter. Decision was to allow each club to set their own ‘enter on the day’ fee, but, it needed to be specified in the regs in the TSM. A guide figure was agreed at £20 but it is up to each club.
10. Written proposals received from clubs. Introduce an Intermediate B class for riders who are too good for the Novice red route but not able to do the full Intermediate blue route, for whatever reason. The recent survey of combine riders showed that most of those who would be affected by it were in favour and most of those who were not affected by it were not. The Expert B route we run has worked well and a similar system seems needed for the Novices. It is a huge leap to move from the red route to the blue route. The only extra work that the Clerk of the Course has to do is to pick 4 or 5 non dangerous sections for the class to ride on the blue route and put a note at the begins card ‘Inter B ride blue’. Lengthy discussion. At the vote it was passed on the casting vote of the Chair. The route will be added to all the combine trials for 2007 but it is up to each club to decide on how many blue sections they ride up to a max of 5. This class will be reviewed at next years AGM.
Proposal that riders in all classes in NKTC trials are allowed to hop and bounce their bikes around in sections without incurring a penalty. Lengthy discussion. ‘Trick’ riding and punch cards will mean queues and when the rules changed to the current TSR22A the queues went. Laying out sections so that riders do not have to hop could make it awkward for Clerks of the Course to get it right at some of the ground we use. The proposal did not get seconded so it was dropped.
11. Proposals from club members present. Proposal that late entries on the day pay £5 above the published entry fee. The course is set out for riders that have pre entered, as you can gauge their ability, day entries can wreck it. Discussion and as this had been already talked about earlier the proposal did not get seconded and was dropped.
Proposal that we should consider one class for all the adult riders on the red route. Discussion. Some riders are very good on Pre67 and Twinshock class and will regularly beat the Novices who have to upgrade if they win 3 trials whereas the Pre67 and Twinshock do not. No Novice will complain that the red route is too easy. The proposal did not get seconded and was dropped.
12. Any other business. None.
13. Date of next meeting Thursday 18th October 2007, start time 8.00pm
Meeting closed 21.35
Agenda for the 2007 AGM will be published nearer the date.

October 8th Trial, Kent & Sussex round 8: Stewards report read out 45 entries in programme, 1 non starter, 7 entries on the day course had 3 laps of 15 sections and started on time. The course was well thought out and the red sections will encourage riders to progress from club to combine trials. Riders spoken to on blue and white routes were full of praise for their sections. Trial was very enjoyable and nice to have 15 sections per lap, well done Kent & Sussex.
Comment from those present, Novice marks were good, Inter’s were outside guidelines but it was a good trial and not a problem. The survey for the AGM taken at this trial shows that the riders were happy to lose more than the guideline scores. Excellent organisation of trial. The Experts and Youth results should be shown on the awards page sent to riders.
